Educated at Durham University. During 1920s-30s travelled to Kenya, Nigeria and Sudan as a teacher and education inspector. Spoke Swahili and French. Joined King's African Rifles during World War II. Returned to England in 1953. Headmaster of Moorlands School, Leeds from 1957 until he retired in 1973.
