General Information:

Gethin - 'Battley was an Irishman from the County Wicklow, and I had met his uncle when at home. We got talking over a drink and when he heard I was on my way to Kisii, he suggested I should call in the following morning at his Firm's offices known as Fontaine and Battley, Import and Export agents. It appeared they were looking for someone to recruit labour for the new soldier-settler farms down country. He told me hundreds of new soldier settlers had been granted land but the Govt. had quite forgotten to arrange labour for these new settlers, a number of whom were now stranded on their land, miles out in the blue, without any labourers. The Governor, Sir Edward Northey, had issued an order that labour had to be found, and in a hurry.'
