Family History: Born 3rd Feb 1909, son of Robert Steele Ball and Olga Sturge, and younger of their two children. His sister was Stella Elizabeth Ball (b. 1907). He was educated at Marlborough College. He graduated from King's College, Cambridge University an M.A. and then with a Diploma of Agriculture. He married Kathleen Grant, daughter of Thomas Grant, on 13th May 1939, and had a son Robert Grant Ball (b. 3rd July 1940). She then married again, this time to David Edward Fielden, (son of Lt.-Col. E.A. Fielden & Phoebe Brand) on 17th Sept 1942, and had two further children -Joshua Anthony Fielden (b. 1944) and Sarah Brand Fielden (b. 1947). She died on 1st July 1998.
