General Information:

Safari Trail - Daly was not only formidable: he was dangerous. Like Mickey Norton he considered authority his natural enemy; and authority knew it and avoided him if it could. He did not care a snap of the fingers for wardens or police. He was often fined for poaching and was said to have an uncanny gift for forseeing exactly how much the fine would be: and took the exact sum to court. One game warden told me that Daly was so dangerous you never knew how he would react to the mildest rebuke. So this warden kept a gun handy in a drawer of his desk. No askari dared approach Daly's camp. He was known to the Africans as 'Bwana kiasi moja' Lord of the single shot; he seldom needed to fire twice. If the old devil saw a policeman or anyone he couldn't identify walking or riding towards his encampment he used to pump bullets into the ground all round the advancing intruder who invariably fled. He met his match one day. He had driven the Belgian Congo authorities beyond endurance. He treated elephants as if they were his private herd, to be killed and denuded of their tusks as he pleased. A notoriously tough Belgian officer with half a platoon of native troops laid for him and caught him. On the way to the magistrate the Irishman made a break for freedom one night. The guard chased and overtook him. The Belgian chained him and for 5 days marched him to judgement. Years later he told me that that week had been the grimmest of his life. - recklessly open handed with money - share his last penny with a friend. Died some years ago vigorous and independent to the end.
Chandler - Daly was a Rhodesian PH and ivory poacher who began his career after his father and older brother James had been murdered in the 1896 Matabele Rebellion. Early on he worked for Cecil Rhodes, trapping young animals alive for Rhodes' Kenilworth Zoo. ….. {lots more} ………….. The Armistice found him in East Africa, and he spent the years from 1918-1926 hunting professionally in East Africa (especially Tanaland and the Serengeti) and the Congo. ………….. {lots more}
