General Information:

Web - Royal African Safaris - Mike Baxendale - Born in Kenya, Mike spent his childhood growing up on the family farm near Thomson's Falls. His father, Neville, was a well-known explorer who spent many years traversing the deserts of Kenya's remote Northern Frontier District with his best friend, the legendary "lion king" George Adamson. Neville's adventures instilled in Mike a deep love and respect for the African bush, and he became an expert tracker at a very young age. Wolseley-Lewis - Aunt Deedee had two daughters and a son by Baxendale: Betty, who became an actress and ended up in America, and Ruth and Nevil who both came to Kenya. Nevil married Audrey Herbert, and Ruth married a Swede named Brannstrom. ……….. I saw quite a lot of my cousin, Nevil Baxendale, and spent some time with him when he was a partner with Jack Dyer at Limuru
Wolseley-Lewis - My cousin Nevil Baxendale had made two homes, the first at Maguga, where he had started life in Kenya. He always made everthing himself, the house, the furniture and the farm buildings. We spent a lot of time at both his homes, the second being at Ol Kalou. He had married Audrey Herbert, such a lovely girl and an excellent cook - she made lovely bread! They had 4 sons ………….. Audrey died of cancer and Neville married again and had 2 stepchildren, a boy and a girl. Nevil's son William made a success of being a chemist working for Wellcome. He bought a farm in Yorkshire for his elder brother Richard who had lost a leg. Nevil retired to England after first trying to live on his original plot at Maguga, where he discovered it was surrounded by Kikuyu farmers and was no longer tenable. In England he lived a country gentleman's life on Richard's farm. He gave all his small amount of capital to William who looked after him and Richard. He died in his chair having come in from shooting rabbits.
St Cuthbert's Church Limuru cemetery - Audrey Louise Baxendale, dearly loved wife of Nevill, and mother of Richard, William, Michael and John, 1905 [sic] - 1961
Bwana - 'he was rather younger than me and twice my size - a veritable tower of strength both physically and psychologically.'
