Colonial - Governor and C-in-C Uganda 1957-61
Rhodesia - Governor of Uganda since 1956, joined the Colonial Service in Tanganyika in 1929 after leaving Balliol College, Oxford. In 1942 he was seconded to the East African Governors' Conference and for the latter part of the war had executive charge of economic warfare matters in East Africa as chairman of the War Supplies Board and the Production and Supply Council and Director of Imports and Disposals. He went to Northern Rhodesia in 1947 as Economic Secretary, and was later Director of Development. He was Governor of Seychelles, 1951-53, and Deputy Governor of Kenya 1953-56.
