East Africa & Rhodesia - 27/10/55 - Mr Stanley McKnight, chairman of East African Industries Ltd., and managing director of the United Africa Company's East African produce group ….. Died in Nairobi last Friday on his 51st birthday. He had collapsed on the previous evening at a meeting of the East African Economics Club. He was this year's president of Nairobi Chambers of Commerce, a past president of the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Eastern Africa, and a past chairman of Dar es Salaam Chamber of Commerce. He had been a temporary member both of the Legislative Council of Tanganyika and of the East Africa Central Legislative Assembly, and was widely regarded as one of the ablest commercial leaders in East Africa. …….
Born in London in 1904, he joined the African and Eastern Trade Corporation Ltd., in London after completing his schooling, and four years later went to Nairobi to Bullows and Roy Ltd., one of their subsidiaries. He was on the staff of the company in the Kenya capital for four years and then in Mombasa from 1930 to 1935, in Kampala for the next two years, and in Dar es Salaam from 1939 to 1943, when he was appointed managing director of the East African Produce Group of the U.A.C. ………
During the war and post-war years he played an important part in assuring the food supplies of the territories. For the past two years McKnight had been chairman of the Mowlem Construction Co. (East Africa) Ltd. And a director of Gailey and Roberts Ltd. He is survived by Mrs McKnight (nee Annie Duffas Webster of Aberdeen), one daughter, and two sons.
Year Book - 1953 - Vice-President, and Ag. President of the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Eastern Africa - Mr McKnight, now resident in Nairobi has lived in all three territories, and is head of a well known produce firm with wide connections; he does a great deal of travelling to branches in the other territories, and with this knowledge to aid him represents on the Association's Executive, both the Iringa and Mwanza Chambers.
