General Information:

Adventurers - Selland [sic] camping with the Brittlebanks ......... went to the goldfields only to find that, although there was certainly gold there, it was not in payable quantities. They had consequently taken to hunting, but Bowker and Bailey ....... had returned to Nairobi. ......... I learnt, to my deep regret, that Selland, from whom I had parted at Koba before coming home, had died in hospital at Nairobi from the effects of blackwater fever ........ His death affected me greatly, as he was as good a comrade as I ever wish to meet, and a man of sterling worth. ........... my trusty old employee and partner, Selland. This man was something of a mystery, for he never spoke of his previous history, and I had to draw my own conclusions about him from my knowledge of the world and just one or two involuntary slips he made. He was undoubtedly a Scandinavian or Finn by origin, and had been a sailor like myself and knew the great outside world fairly thoroughly. He had served in the American Navy and had fought with the British in the Boer War. Selland, in my opinion, was not his right name. He was a stiffly built, powerful little man ........ he proved to be a loyal companion right through, and I always looked after him to the best of my ability. In Abyssinia he proved himself invaluable, relieving me of much trouble and responsibility ....... He had no sense of humour whatever, and neither my funniest stories nor those of the many varied characters we met ever drew a smile from his wooden face. .......... Blackwater, probably due to careless living, took him off while I was on my holiday in England, and he died intestate. The British authorities have never been able to discover any living relatives to whom his little fortune (about £2000) could be handed over, though personally I have no doubt they do exist somewhere in N. Europe.
