Hedenström (1844–1904), the pioneer of the SEM mission at Gäläb, who in 1880 set Dawit Amanu? el and the young Täwäldä Mäd??n Gäbrä Mäd??n (1860–1930), his students at the time, the task of translating the New Testament into T?gre. Dawit, described by Musa ?Aron (1988:9) as the father of the T?gre language, began work by translating the Gospel of Mark, with the assistance of Täwäldä Mäd??n Gäbrä Mäd??n18 who would later be the first native evangelical worker to be ordained on the African continent.
