Kenya Diary - May 1904 - Kabwuren - Hearing that Mayes was in Kabwuren I joined him with my detachment, and was not at all pleased to find that Mr & Mrs Cary were with him. Cary commands our detachment at Nandi Boma. (Cary was Master of Falkland, Grenadier Guards). ........... 1st June - Mayes and the Carys left for Nandi Boma early this morning and I was glad to see the last of them. I dislike and mistrust Mayes and have no use for an English lady under these conditions. ....... Mar. 1905 - I marched up to Nandi Fort from Kibigori. The only British inhabitants of the station are Mr & Mrs Cary and Walter Mayes ........ I do not think much of Cary as a company officer. When General Manning inspected the company only a few months back he ordered it to be disbanded next August. Meanwhile I have to get it into decent shape, and I hope that when it is next inspected the disbandment order will be suspended. ..... Cary and his wife leave, I am thankful to say, for Nairobi tomorrow.
Debrett - Capt. & Brevet Major Grenadier Guards Reserve of Officers; was Dep. Governor of Wandsworth Prison 1910-1914; S. Africa 1900-02, in British East Africa 1905, European War 1914-19 (Legion of Honour, Brevet Major, 1914 star, OBE)
North - Resident at Nandi 30-9-1904, 31-12-1904; Member of the Sotik Punitive Force dep. Kericho for Sotik 7-6-1905; returned to Kericho 12-7-1905; end of appt. 7-12-1905; 'Uncommonly slack' (Meinertzhagen, RH)
North - Issued with Public Officers Game Licence 8/10/1903 Nairobi
