General Information:

Letter from Mrs J. Hawkins - '...... I was a tiny baby at the time of some of his experiences, eg. fought the leopard bare handed, bitten by a zebra in the stomach while catching the foal, catching giraffe by the tail (true), tossed in the air by a rhino while trying to catch the calf, having a 15 foot python curl around his arm and nearly lost his bad arm trying to feed the snake, catch secretary birds by his old safari car. I have a lot of photos of my dad and the animals we have had on the farm, leopard cub, cheetah cubs, baby rhino, baby elephant which I brought up on the bottle.'
Letter from Victor Kane - Another character, and a very tough little man was Gilbert Sauvage, a game trapper and professional hunter. On one occasion he was attacked by a wounded leopard, his rifle was some distance away, he wrestled and eventually choked the animal by twisting its tongue down its throat. He was very seriously mauled and it cost him many months in hospital. He made a complete recovery however. His home was surrounded by compounds containing many varieties of animals amongst which was an adult chimpanzee named 'Andy'. Gilbert and an Italian who worked with him used to wrestle in a friendly way with Andy until he became too aggressive. I am not sure if he died or had to be put down but he ended up as an exhibit in the Coryndon Museum. He had a nephew - Gerald Touche
