Later he owned and operated a large fleet of fishing boats on the lake but this proved to be an unprofitable venture. He then became an Auctioneer, Land, Estate and General Commission Agent. He also became involved with automobile repairs and the sale of accessories, and that department rapidly developed into a business which was widely known throughout Uganda.                                 
Letter from Mrs A. Durant - her father, Mr L.P. Marshall went up to Uganda and was in partnership with John Farley in an auction business - it went bankrupt.
