He was a cheerful, round faced man with white hair and a slight stoop and always walked as if he had just dismounted from a horse.
Verandah - he had lost a thumb, hacked off by a Pathan in a charge in some Frontier war. Mother told me he never even noticed it till the battle was over. Mrs Stack ... a tall, spare, very upright, elderly lady with grey hair pulled back in a knot at the back of her head. ....... a voice which seemed destined to command cohorts of underlings ...... She had a fine seat on a horse and always wore breeches and stockings about the farm. She looked unnatural in a skirt. ...... The Colonel had a stud of Arab horses.
