General Information:

Led a party of men up the river Tana in a steam pinnace in order to survey the boundaries of Freeland. The expedition was soon in trouble; the river was low and the pinnace had to be fended off sandbanks every few minutes. At night mosquitoes, resembling a mist so great were their numbers, kept up their deadly attack until dawn. After a few days the crew deserted and while the rest of the party returned to the river mouth Glucksellij began a long walk toward the higher reaches of the river. He chose the spot where Kikuyu village afterwards stood, built himself a house and later set up as a surveyor in the new Protectorate.

Coast Causerie - The Freelanders - story of river trip up the Tana to delineate boundaries - the heat is intense, matching only the ferocity of the myriads of mosquitoes that settle upon travellers like a cloud. What with these and other troubles the crew of the pinnace mutinied. What happened to the boat then is unknown; for Glucksellij having had his fill of misery jumped the ship and, following the river, made his way up-country and eventually found himself at Kikuyu where he obtained a piece of land and settled.
