Tucker - 1892 - Wakoli's - Here we had hoped to meet Mr F.C. Smith but he had left some 3 months previously for Uganda. Sent home ill never to return by 1894.
North - Wakoli's, Busoga 1891-2; resigned Oct 1893, ill Busoga - In 1891 F.C. Smith, who had formed one of Bishop Tucker's party travelling to Uganda the previous year, journeyed to Busoga in company with Gordon. 1892 - he returned alone - Chief Wakoli was accidentally? shot and he had to escape and was shortly afterwards invalided home.
Uganda Journal - Vol 23, p.146 - Captain Smith's Expedition to Lake Victoria - 1890-3 CMS layman missionary in Uganda; February to September 1891 with Rev. E.C. Gordon opened mission station at Wakoli's, Busoga; June 1892 re-commenced work at Wakoli's but was compelled to withdraw when on 6 July Wakoli was accidentally shot by a mission porter; 1896 ordained.
CMS 1890 - Age 26. b. at Newport, Isle of Wight. Newport Gram. Sch. FLS, FRGS. 1889 at Prep Instn.; 1890 CM Coll. under training as a Lay Evangelist. Volunteered with J.V. Dermott, J.W. Dunn and J.W.H. Hill for the party of 4 (in response to urgent telegram received May 6) for E. Eq. Africa Mission, and left England May 10 1890. The only survivor of the party, though several times in extreme peril. 1891-2, stationed at Busoga, evangelistic work at intervals throughout Uganda, latterly at Luba's, where Bishop Hannington was murdered. Last work before leaving Busoga was to teach Luba's sons to read. 1892, Sept 16, to England. 1893, Oct. resigned, and entered Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
