Tom Lawrence: He could have been a victim of friendly fire. The aircraft ( a Spitfire V EP 685) of F/O Lindsay crashed on the outskirts of Dingli (believed to be Ta,Netta Ta,Falzon) between 0640hrs and 0738hrs. There were no claims made by Luftwaffe pilots during the raid, but the AA Gunners claimed two aircraft shot down. One was a Bf109 flown by Uffz. Herbert Wagner, which crashed into a field at Zebbieh at approximately 0700hrs. The other aircraft could have been that of F/Lt. Lindsay which was seen to dive into the ground from 20,000ft minus its tail unit  (http://www.aircrewremembered.com/lindsay-alec-ian.html).
Personal War: He joined the RAF at Croydon on 11th Sept 1940 as a Pilot Officer, flying his first operation on 15th Sept 1940 (Battle of Britain day) with a patrol over Canterbury during which the squadron claimed three enemy aircraft destroyed and two damaged. He attended 58 O.T.U. His first scramble was 5th Sept 1940. He was shot down on 14th Sept 1940 in what was his first engagement with enemy aircraft, and then engaged them another six times in the next six days (all ME 109s). On 11th June 1941 he had his first catapault from a Merchant Ship to which his log entry was the succinct ‘Amazing’. He led four Spitfires from HMS Furious to Malta under Operation Bellows on 17th Aug 1942. Fourteen pilots arrived for the squadron that day, of whom seven were later killed and one taken PoW  (http://www.aircrewremembered.com/lindsay-alec-ian.html).
