EASC Vol 8 p 256 - Thomas Broadwood Johnson was born in 1870 in Hackney, but his family hailed from Sunderland. He was educated at the City of London School and then went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained his BA in 1892 (Junior Optime: Maths Tripos). In 1892 he attended the Cambridge Clergy Training School and in 1893 was made deacon by the Bishop of Durham. He was curate of Sacriston, Co. Durham from 1893-98, became a priest on 5 June 1895. In 1898 he moved to be curate of St. Stephen's Bishopwearmouth (Sunderland) until 1901, being accepted as a CMS missionary on 16 April 1901. He left for Uganda on 29 September 1901 and was based in the Toro area for 5 years, initially at Kabarole until 1904 when he made Butiti the HQ for CMS in Eastern Toro. He returned to the UK on furlough in late 1906 and returned to Hoima, Uganda in 1908. He died of blackwater fever there on 20 June 1909.
