General Information:
Eldoret - A fine Norwegian who is 85 years old, still spends his time between Norway and Kenya. He arrived at Burnt Forest in 1910 and was a saw-miller. He first came to build a rest house for Alan Thompson in 1910 who owned 52,000 acres by putting the acreage in lots of people's names in Nairobi. Mr Arnesen said he and his partner, Whitehead, built three houses for A.C. Hoey (one a "hunting box" for A.C.'s father-in-law, Mr Wright) and the hill below the house was known as "Hunting Kopje". Among the teeming game he particularly mentioned the rhino, buffalo and elephant. He bought machinery in Nairobi when there was no bank in 64. He owed £50 but could not borrow this on his title deeds in Nairobi; however, when the Standard Bank opened on the Plateau, the manager lent him the money with no security.
