Nicholls - The government could not delay indefinitely the education of white children on the plateau and in February 1915 the Central School was finally opened at Eldoret. By June of the following year it had 50 students. A new block was erected next to an old corrugated-iron building at the end of the road beyond the Roman Catholic church, and Mr and Mrs Humphries were appointed as the headmaster and his asistant. F.W. Humphries, of medium height, sturdy and well set, with a fine-shaped head and dark hair greying at the temples, had a dark moustache and twinkling brown eyes. He was a wonderful teacher and keen gardener. Mrs G. Humphries, with grey eyes and brown hair plaited and wound round at the nape of her neck, was able to keep perfect discipline. Their daughter Marjorie (Margaret Georgiana), a piano-player with a pleasant singing voice, had recently left school and helped with the teaching.
