W. A. Kempe diary 17 May 1914 The rain held off & we had a heavy downpour on Saturday night. Boxing was all the subject of interest, starting from a match for £50 a side in which McCrae beat Bert Lee the latter being disqualified in the 2nd round for holding. I went to see it in the theatre with Percy Browne. Thereafter Lee seems to have gone half mad, attacked the referee in the street the next day & the following day his opponent’s trainer with a broken glass. Every day seemed to bring up some new story of a scrap, in one of them some dozen people seem to have taken part. Eventually most of them were conducted to prison.
