EAS 15 Feb 1938 He came to Kenya from Australia in 1911 and for some time acted as a stock inspector, later acquiring a farm at Sabatia and recently taking over the Equator Sawmills at Maji Mazuri and the Liegel sawmill in the Grogan Forest Concession near Eldarma Ravine. At these mills most of the butter boxes for the Kenya Cooperative Creameries are made. Just before Christmas he returned from an extensive tour of Australia. He was buried at his private cemetery on his property at Sabatia next to the grave of his first wife.
EAS 16 Feb 1938 36 years since he came to Kenya. He worked on Dr Doering's sheep farm at Naivasha, then became a stock inspector in the Kampi ya Moto area. In the war when he joined the EAMR and was transferred to Remounts in 1913. He was invalidated to Australia where he was born. Soon after the Armistice he returned to Kenya and started to trade cattle from the Boran country to Nyeri. Was a successful venture but unfortunately he sank all the capital he had acquired in a flax enterprise on the Kinnangop. He then started a land agency business in Nakuru in partnership with Mr Crane. Later he struck a bad patch and was down on his luck in Mombasa. He went into partnership with Mr Lomax on the latter's very slender capital, and their contracting business prospered. They came up country from Mombasa, where they had been operating, and eventually settled down to sawmilling at Sabatia, and this only came to an end when the Equator Sawmills decided to close down. Shortly afterwards the partnership was dissolved by a mutual consent, Mr Lomax turning his attention to farming at Rongai, while Murton started up a sawmill and a farm at Eldolat, subsequently taking over the larger timber concession at Maji Mazuri. He was one of the most knowledgeable men on timber in the colony and his advice was in demand. Had a great gift for organization which was helped by his ability to get on with all who worked with him, European, Asiatic and native alike. He found time to take an interest in many other schemes. He discovered a reef at Lolgorien and continued trading in native cattle from time to time.
