Interview between Chris Youe and Sir John Hewett 20 July 1986 Bodleian Library Mss Afr.s.2042 Got 3000 acres free in Trans Nzoia. Supposed to pay £1 per acre but never did. I was brought up as a gentleman's son in England with very little education but my father lost all his money so I found myself a farm labourer at the age of 15 having had to leave school. In World War One started off in Bowker's Horse, one of the squadrons in the East African Mounted Rifles. From motorbike to dispatch riding. Then all us Europeans were pulled out to go into the KAR. Moved Uganda to recruit and train Africans. Malaria drove me out of Trans Nzoia it and I had a farm of 3500 acres in Naivasha.
Chairman Agricultural Sub-Committee and various agricultural jobs. Commander of Naivasha Kenya Defence Force 1940-44.
Pioneers - In June 1914, at the age of 19 years, I came to British East Africa as a pupil on the farm of W.E.D. Knight, always known as Wednesday Knight. I shared a grass hut in the garden with another pupil and was woken at 5 a.m. by Wed and led to the dairy by an African, to supervise the milking. The cows were milked into a variety of old tins, four-gallon paraffin debes taking pride of place. I understood not one word of the language and the milkers thought this a great joke, drinking most of the milk and getting me a ticking-off from Wed when we got back to the house. … The Knights' farm was then about 2400 acres.
