General Information:
Terence Gavaghan, Of Lions and Dungbeetles, 1999 In 1945 he was 5 years my senior, an old Harrovian and a graduate from Cambridge with the hallmarks of apparent diffidence and actual self assurance. He was long, sinewy and hirsute of body, with dry dark hair, a pallid and a haggard face and an indrawn mouth, giving a breathy, lisping touch to a slightly mocking style of charm. He was a demon at squash, while always seeming on the point of collapse. His evening ride of 3 miles return to the lookout over Ethiopian Moyale made up his stint of 'horse and foot miles', required to be reported monthly, the total thus varying in proportion to the days of the month. This ploy had a certain relevance to a frondeur between us, which taught me a lesson of trust. Colin was no martinet and Dubas' turnout was not one of his preoccupations. He had just been alerted to expect to visit by the Governor and asked if I would send my pristine 'No 1s' over to be sent back by return for my own ceremonial parade, I did. His scruffy uniforms came back. Great joke! Nevertheless I enjoyed his entertaining company and his relaxed invigilation of my exam papers left me eligible for 'first class' confirmation and thus for passing an efficiency bar on the administrative salary scale. He lived in a whitewashed mud plaster and corrugated iron house.
