He was a firm supporter of the Coffee Planters' Association founded in 1909, and we find him proposing its reorganization as the Coffee Planters' Union in 1917. He became  Vice-President of the Union in 1920 and was to do valuable work for this body for very many years. His farm later passed to his son and was sold comparatively recently, on the latter's death.

EAS 6 Mar 1937 He came to East Africa in 1895. Born in Glasgow in 1868 and educated there, he went to sea at a early age and sailed the seas for some years. In New York he came under religious influence and after a course of training came out to E Africa as a missionary in 1896. Hetrekked with wife and family from Mombasa to Machakos where he was engaged in his missionary work under the Africa Inland Mission. In 1902 he took up farming at Kiambu and made his home there. Mainly interested in coffee. He also had a small plantation on the coast where lately he had spent much time. For a while he engaged in journalism. He was editor of the now defunct Nairobi News, from 1908 to 1910 he was editor of the Advertiser, also now nonexistent, and in 1912 he was editor of the East African Standard. He took a great interest in politics and has served the country in many important public capacities. Was a nominated unofficial member of Legislative Council 1916 to 1920, and elected member (for Kikuyu) from 1926 to 1927. He was a member of the War Council from 1917 to 1919 and a member of the Executive Council from 1919 to 1920. He was a vice-president and one of the founders of the Coffee Planters' union, past vice-president of the Convention of Associations and held seats on other public bodies. He was an active member of the Colonists Association, the precursor of the Convention of Associations. He was one of the members of the delegation headed by Lord Delamere that went to England in 1930. His services to the community in other directions were numerous and valuable. One of his most important tasks was as a member of the Bushe Commission, a commission appointed to enquire into the administration of justice in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika. He also gave valuable evidence to the Morris-Carter Land Commission. Awarded the OBE in 1929. Was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church, being an elder in St Andrew's, and took part frequently in missionary conferences. He was greatly interested in the work of the Philharmonic Society. He had a kindly disposition. His long association with the church and the influence of his nonconformist Scottish outlook tended to modify and restrain his utterances on controversial issues but one was never left in doubt as to the strength of his convictions, nor to his very practical contribution to discussions in the Legislative Council, at conferences, or in private life.
