Terence Gavaghan, Of Lions and Dungbeetles, 1999 He arrived in Baragoi in 1952 with Michael Stallone of the Consolata Catholic Mission to build a new school. He was a huge smiling peasant, with the strength to manhandle his BSA 500 motorbike through mud, his tiny feet encased in soft black home-stitched shoes, to shoot game for the pot with his shoulder-butt fitted Luger automatic. A school complex had been pegged out on a spacious campus, granted by the Samburu Council and Baragoi Elders, between the DC's camp and village, adjacent to the site chosen for a hospital. Dressed stone buildings for the Baragoi Primary School went up at a great pace, despite every forty-four gallon drum of water used being dug out of the Baragoi lugga and hefted by Carlo in his battered short wheel base Land Rover.
