Alton Forrester to his sister Hilda , Nyeri 24 Aug 1914, Papers of Peggy Forrester, Bodleian Library Micr.Afr.586 I got home last night from Nairobi, went down to join the volunteers, but got there too late - they have stuck recruiting. We could have got in by special favours of some of the officers, but we weren't taking any of their special favours. It will pay us better to stay at home and look after our farming. It is all confusion down in Nairobi - the authorities don't seem to know what to do. Volunteers are guarding the railway line, others are in Nairobi being drilled to death. Food is bad and they get 4 rupees a day. They have to find most of the kit themselves. Everyone is dissatisfied and wanting to return to the farms. Nothing is further from their minds than invading German East Africa.
