Nairobi Forest Road cemetery - Harold John Odow [sic], British, age 50, died 17/1/39
EAS 18 Jan 1939 He was formerly general manager of the East African Power and Lighting Company and was found by his wife yesterday morning lying shot dead in a room of their house at Muthaiga with a service revolver lying by his side. Wound in his right temple. Was in a dressing gown. He had just returned from an early round of golf. He came to Kenya in 1928 after a long service with Merz and Mcclellan, the well known consulting engineers of London. He was responsible for a great amount of the work in connection with the electrification of the Natal mainline railway system. While with Merz and Mcclellan he was also responsible for the designing of substations for the English grid system. He had lengthy experience with various engineering firms. From 1911 to 1913 he was assistant maintenance superintendent of the Victoria Falls and Transvaal Power Company and from 1916 to 1918 he served with the Ministry of Munitions and with the Sappers. He became a full member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1926. He came to the East African Power and Lighting Company in 1928 as chief engineer and took over the position of acting general manager within a few months of his arrival. He became general manager the following year and it was largely owing to his efforts that the undertaking developed to its present state of efficiency from a very small beginning. He was also responsible for the development of the firm in Uganda. He left the EAP&L last August. For several years he had represented the company on the Nairobi Chamber of Commerce and last year was a member of the Chamber Committee.
