Ancestry He was born in Yorkshire in 1896. When he was 16 he joined the Royal Horse Artillery and fought during the First World War. After the war, he emigrated to Canada where he worked as an engineer for a few years. He moved back to England, and from there went to East Africa to the Miwani Sugar Plantation as an assistant to the chief engineer. It was there that he met and married Mary Van Rooyen, his wife of 53 years. Wilby lived and worked in Africa until 1982. He and his wife moved to Wales to be with their daughter Carole and her family.
