Ray Morrell - My father died in 1939 aged 48, a couple of weeks after the outbreak of WW2 and my mother married Edgar Crandle of the Sudan Customs in 1941, 2 days after Pearl Harbour. We lived in Khartoum for a couple of years and when Edgar retired at the age of 49 went to England by convoy arriving just in time for D-Day. Stirring times for an 11 year old! I went to school in Oxford, did my National Service in the Air Force and came back to the Kenya Police as their youngest Asst. Inspector at the outbreak of the Emergency. In 1956 I married Carina, elder daughter of W.H. 'Martini' & Helena Annie 'Peggy' Martin. Carina trained at an agricultural college in England but was never able to do more than keep a few beasts in the back yard; but she had a Trainer's Licence and was successful in a modest way with difficult horses, where others had given up.
She was for 20 years the Secretary at Hillcrest Secondary School and a great help to parents and staff (but not after lunch). We have 3 children, Graham now an Airbus Captain with Emirates so lives with his family in Dubai, Iain who is a horticulturist, now in Nairobi after a spell in new Zealand and Nicola a landscape gardener who lives here in Kilifi. Sadly dear Carina died in February 2008.
