New York Herald 13 Sep 1890 Asbury Park has another society sensation this morning. Miss Marie Watts of Keyport walked into the office of Dr Louis M Seymour, a popular dentist, and demanded that he should publicly recognize her as his lawful wife. Finding that she was in dead earnest, Dr Seymour succeeded in getting her to accompany him to the Central Hotel, where he left her promising to call later and fix matters up. But up to a late hour this evening he had not done any fixing and I found that his object in taking the young lady to the hotel was merely to get her out of his office. At the hotel I saw Miss Watts, or Mrs Seymour, as she calls herself. She said that early in April Dr Seymour took her to New York and their marriage was solemnized at the house of the Rev Dr Paxton, of the West Presbyterian Church, who called in two young ladies of his household as witnesses. Not expecting any difficulty in having her husband recognize her as his wife when she came down here, she said she did not bring her marriage certificate with her. But to set at rest the story she alleges Dr Seymour circulated to the effect that she was not his wife, she went before a notary public and made affidavit that she was. 'The trouble is right here', she added, 'when I consented to become Dr Seymour's wife it was only five months after the death of his first wife. Because of this he did not want me to make known our wedding, alleging that it would lower him in the estimation of his patrons and the public in general, who had held his first wife in high esteem. I willingly agreed, as I was anxious to finish my course at the Glenwood Institute from which I was to graduate at the close of term. After my graduation I frequently requested him to make our marriage public, as the concealment was strongly disapproved of by my parents. He made various excuses. In August 1st I heard he was paying warm attention to various young ladies. I came to Asbury Park and found the reports were true. Dr Seymour denied that he had married Miss Watts, but when I told him of her statements and affidavits he refused to say anything more about the matter. At Keyport I saw the girl's parents, the Rev and Mrs Elias H Watts who are well advanced in years and highly respected by the community. They told me that their daughter was certainly married to Dr Seymour, that they had seen the marriage certificate, and were much shocked on learning that he had refused to acknowledge her as his wife. Mrs Watts told me that Dr Seymour first paid attention to her daughter before he married his first wife and renewed his attentions after his first wife's death. The courts will have to decide whether it is Miss Watts or Mrs Seymour who is a very pretty woman about 21 years old. Dr Seymour it's about 10 years her senior. Before coming to Asbury Park he had an office in West 39th Street. Popular sympathy is with the alleged wife.
