EAS 16 Aug 1939 A respected member of the Jewish community Koonin, a dental surgeon practising at Nairobi and Mombasa, died suddenly at Mombasa on Monday night from heart failure. He was a Russian born, naturalized British subject: he was naturalized in South Africa in 1910. He took a university degree at Kharkov. He left Russia in the troubled days of 1904 and went to England where he began his practice as a dental surgeon. In 1906 he went to South Africa and built up a lucrative practice in Cape Town. He lived there for 30 years and then travelled through South Africa, South West Africa, Angola and the Belgian Congo, setting up practice atf various places. In 1936 he decided to visit Kenya on his way back to Europe and Russia where he had intended to retire. He found Kenya to be to be his ideal country and after his visit to Europe he returned the same year and set up a practice in Nairobi. He was joined by his surviving partner Mr Hirsch, and the practice was carried on both in Nairobi and Mombasa. Recently Koonin decided for health reasons to reside in Mombasa. He has no relatives here.
