He entered the Stephansstift in Hanover in 1900 and attended the Leipzig Missionary Seminary from 1901 to 1902. In 1902, he returned to the Stephansstift, where he learned carpentry in particular. At the beginning of 1903 he was drafted into the Russian army and moved to Manchuria, where he was assigned as a sergeant, primarily in office work. He stayed at the Stephansstift again from December 1906 to October 1907, learning, among other things, blacksmithing and metalworking. Based on his qualifications, he was seconded to the Kamba Mission as a missionary craftsman on October 27, 1907, and arrived in Mulango on December 20, 1907. He carried out construction work in Myambani, moved to Ikutha in the spring of 1908, and married Auguste Hartmann in Mombasa on October 20, 1910. Returning home, he began teaching at the Stephansstift in Hanover on November 1, 1915, worked for a time at the missionary publishing house in Leipzig, and later took up an office position in Wunstorf. Birth was released from missionary service at the end of 1922 and returned to the service of the Stephansstift.
