Harry Macdonald (son): He joined the Black Watch at 16 (said he was 18) and went with his elder brother Jim into the Royal Horse Artillery at Curragh, Ireland. Moved to the North-west Frontier of India. His father bought his discharge and he moved to the paper mill 22 miles north of Calcutta. He joined the local territorial army viz. Cossipore Artillery, Calcutta Volunteer Battery. In September 1914 the battery sailed to Mombasa to fight the Germans in Tanganyika. During a furlough in Nairobi he met Flora Gover and they were married in Nairobi in November 1915. Flora Gover worked in Whiteaway Laidlaw store in Nairobi and had gone out to Kenya to be near her sister Elsie Sykes née Gover, who had married Charles Henry Sykes. The Macdonalds left East Africa for India in 1917.
