Letter from Mrs Christine Hart 19 Sep 1994  In 1924 Sophia married Bill Suffield who for many years was secretary to the Muthaga Club. During the first part of their marriage they lived in a cottage in the grounds of the club. Later they also had a farm at Limuru, run in partnership with Colonel Horace Case. This was a property purchased from a Mr and Mrs Gilpin in the 1930s. At the time of his marriage to Sophia Bill was a widower (his first wife had been a 'Noon') with two small sons). The eldest, John Sufffield worked for Stanvac and Mobiloil before emigrating to Australia in 1965. Dennis, the younger brother, was at various times mine host at Brackenhurst Country Club, the Stag's Head at Nakuru and Kampala Club and he later went to live in Johannesburg. There wa also a daughter Ann whose early claim to fame was becoming head girl at Limuru School in the mid 1940s. In 1929 Sylvia married Allan Johnston who arrived in the colony in 1926 as a young civil engineer with the KUR&H. He was responsible for surveying the routes for many of the upcountry branch lines. Allan remained with the railways until the early 50s when he took up an appointment with the PWD and became resident engineer for the Embakasi Airport project. He subsequently became the PWD's runway expert. Sylvia and Allan had two daughters, Jennifer the eldest went to Australia and Christine the younger. The emigrated to Australia in n1969 and Allan died in 1974 and Sylvia in 1977.
