John Heppes, email 2 Nov 2004 - supposedly ran away from home at an early age and went to sea. However we do know that he ended up in Durban where he settled down. In 1879 he married Charlotte Maria Schwegmann and set about having a family. They had at least 11 children. ….. I believe that he took all living children with him when he emigrated to British East Africa in 1906
Neil Heppes - The story was that Nicholas used to go to Nakuru on a sled drawn by oxen and later converted to a cart with wheels he obtained from a friend in SA who was a cartwright. He then used a horse to pull it when he went for supplies.
