Nairobi St. Austin's cemetery - died 12 Apr 1925 aged 25

Sheila Elvidge: Bertha Carlotta Glossi was born in Vienna around 1906. The family moved to Dar es Salaam about 1907/8. The parents were interned in Pietermaritzburg about 1916 and Bertha was sent to a convent in Nairobi. During the time at the convent she was visited and cared for by a woman with a surname Bessler, or possibly Cave [ must be Eric Bessler d. 1925]. At the age of 17 Bertha married Mrs Bessler's son and had a daughter, Erica. She was widowed at the age of 18. The family were apparently very wealthy and owned large farms around the Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret area. Bertha then married Harold A. Bates approximately 1928/9 and their son Norman was born at the Maia Carberry nursing home in 1930. The Bates family moved to England in 1931 but Erica remained in Kenya with her grandmother. When Mrs Cave died Erica inherited everything but when Kenya became independent farmland was appropriated and she went to live in Australia where she died.
