EAS 5 May 1939 He had been very seriously ill since the middle of last year. In October, in the hopes that it might help towards recovery, he was taken to South Africa and went into a hospital at Durban but as he was still making no great progress, he was brought back to Kenya. He came to Kenya from South Africa in 1914. Served in the Great War up to the end of the Tanganyika campaign in the EAMR, and was specially picked out for scouting duties. He was offered a commission in the KAR but declined it. After the campaign he went to South Africa for a short time. He returned to the colony at the end of 1918, when he managed his father's coffee plantation at Kiambu. In 1920 he came to the Nanyuki district, where he had a farm on the outskirts of the township, and a little later he became the owner of the Nanyuki Sawmills. He was very keen on sport of all kinds, especially tennis. A member of the Nanyuki Sports Club, he served for some time on the committee. Presented a cup for tennis, which is played for annually, and only a short time ago put up a stand on the racecourse for owners and trainers entirely at his own expense. He was very proud of his stable, which won many races all over the country. A charming personality, kind and friendly, he was out to help all he could.
