Last Chance For years he was the most outstanding spokesman of the Uasin Gishu Kenyans. His grey-haired wife was an active public figure in her way. She had trained as a nurse in the Orange Free State, came to the Uasin Gishu in 1909, and since then, apparently, had delivered all the babies within a range of sixty-five miles of her. She had often made these trips by mule or ox-cart. And she had delivered many an African baby in its beehive grass hut, kneeling half the night through to help a native woman who had been maimed by the fierce Nandi female circumcision. She was a grand person too, in the old-fashioned Boer style.
