Childhood - Jean Tomes (née Mackinlay) [sic] - My father was a Merchant Seaman who married my mother in Mombasa Cathedral in 1917 and he was part of a team of divers who built the foundations for Kilindini harbour. He was paid by the minute because of the danger. I was 2 yrs old when my parents parted so my mother had a hard life.
