EAS 18 Oct 1929 Kenya's first casualty of the war. Lang, 23 year old member of the Kenya Auxiliary Air Unit, died in the European hospital from injuries received when the machine which he was solo piloting crashed some 300 or 400 yards from the fence bordering the aerodrome. He was about to land at the time of the crash. Flying low into the breeze, and it is believed that the engine stalled, that the machine then got into a spin and crashed on its nose and right wing, turning upside down. Lang was extricated from the machine and rushed to hospital where he died very shortly after admission. The machine was a small one which belonged to Wilson Airways before the company was taken over by the RAF and it was very badly damaged. Lang was previously employed in the traffic department of Messrs Wilson Airways and had held an A license. He was in the Kenya Regiment, and it is understood that he was drafted to the AAU only the day before the Regiment left for Kampala. Lang is the son of Mr James Lang of Nairobi. He was educated at the government school in Nairobi and Christ's Hospital in London.
