Blue Book 1916 Lt.-Com. Bertram Robert Graham, Commandant 3rd Battn. KAR, appt 4 Oct 1912
Brigadier-General John Henry Verinder Crowe, C.B General Smuts' Campaign in East Africa, 1918 At about 4.30 p.m. No. 9 Battery crossed the river and was brought into action on the south side of the village. Shortly after their arrival the 5th South African Battery came up with the 2nd South African Infantry Brigade from Chala, and were brought into action on the right of No. 9. Meanwhile, the infantry were gradually pushing forward. On the left the King's African Rifles had made considerable progress. At about 5:00 p.m., as they were making a rush led by their Colonel, a voice was heard shouting: 'Come on, the King's African Rifles, this way!' Colonel Graham turned in the direction indicated, and fell, having received five bullets from a machine gun. It was the German machine gunner who, in excellent English, had been cheering them on. It is gratifying to know that the cunning German and the whole of his crew were wiped out later, and that the gun fell into our hands.
