Typescript Ernest Barraclough by Martin Barraclough After trying diamond mining in South Africa Barraclough went to Kenya in 1929 and decided that a hotel was needed in the neighbourhood of Thomson's Falls. Barry's Hotel opened on 1 Aug 1931. Ernest was a popular and sociable hotelier and Barry's Hotel became the centre of Thomson's Falls society.
He and his son Martin had 5 fingers when born, but they were promptly removed.
When WW2 broke out, he re-enlisted in the army and was posted to the General Service Unit in Mombasa, leaving his wife to run the hotel. In 1942 in Mombasa he contracted pneumonia and died on 10 Oct. He was buried in the Commonwealth War Graves section of Mombasa Mbaraki cemetery.
Marjorie sold the hotel which was renamed Nyahuruhu Lodge and later Thomson's Falls Lodge.
