Terence Gavaghan, Of Lions and Dungbeetles, 1999  Headmaster of the government secondary school in Kisii. Was a gentle, lonely, formally courteous man, who came from County Cork. He could talk and teach about many things, as well as being a whimsical partner at bridge. Years later in Nyanza  province he was stigmatized in his Education Department annual report as having a reputation for tippling - a difficult enough stain to remove. He sat with friends at bridge one evening, a glass of whisky at hand, went quietly home and shot himself. He left me his small French Mab-Brevete, sleeve action pistol with three silver rounds, and a maroon leather volume of The Vision of Dante which I treasure yet.
