R.A.W. Procter, Random Reminiscences, Bodleian Library Mss.Afr.s.702  Went to Kenya as medical officer in charge of the native hospital in Mombasa. 200 beds and the SMO was Dr NP Jewell. Feb 1923 went to Moyale as MO of the 5th KAR. The natives around Wajir had a high resistance to anthrax. Then he was sent to Fort Hall where one MO and one Indian sub-assistant surgeon were expected to deal with an area containing nearly one million Africans. Life was enlivened by the old exhumation and the occasional postmortem performed under a thorn tree in cases of sudden death, usually murder. There were biennial plague epidemics after the rains. Was horrified at the mutilation caused by female circumcision. He became SMO, Coast Province, in charge of the European Hospital in Mombasa.
