EAS 20 Jan 1939 He had been resident in Kenya since 1919, when he joined the firm of Harrison, Salmon and Cresswell. Four years later he set up practice on his own and almost up to the time of his death he was actively engaged in his profession although it was noticed for some time past that he was an ailing man. An eloquent advocate, there are few branches of litigation, civil and criminal, in which he has not been engaged, from murder trials to defending the rights of the Swahili and ex Sudanese askaris in matters of property claims. At yesterday's funeral there was a large number of his old native ex soldier friends, as well as Indians among the large gathering of European mourners. Born at Burgersdorp, South Africa, he was educated at Grahamstown, studied for the bar and became an attorney at law, but many years of his life were spent in the fighting forces. A great imperialist and lover of S Africa he was with Rhodes in Rhodesia in the early days and saw service in the Boer War and the Great War, serving throughout both. With the famous Imperial Light Horse during the  Boer War he received a commission on the field and had attained the rank of captain at the end of hostilities. After the Boer War he practised at Pretoria and took a great interest in politics. He contested Pretoria E in the first union elections as a Unionist, his opponent being General Smuts. When the European war started he immediately volunteered. He saw service in German West Africa and later with the South African contingent in East Africa when he commanded the 4th South African horse. He saw strenuous service in that campaign. In 1916 he was selected by General Smuts to proceed to England to take charge of the huge coloured labour camp at Folkestone where his organizing ability and knowledge made him invaluable in the training and drafting of labour troops to the Western Front. He retired at the end of the war with the rank of Colonel. In 1919 he came to British East Africa and joined the firm of Harrison, Salmon and Cresswell, afterwards Harrison, Cresswell and Hopley. There were a few branches of sport, particularly boxing in which he was not keenly interested and on his in his youth actively engaged. In later years he frequently indulged in his favourite pastime of bird shooting: he was an excellent shot. He owned a farm at Sotik and at one time was interested in mining and was associated with his brother in law major BF Webb in prospecting and mining interests in the Lolgorien area.
