Ruark - a very fine hunter who is now retired, once sat on the ground with a twisted ankle and no bullets for his gun while a wounded buffalo got up and staggered, sick but still furious, toward him. Bowman screamed for a gunbearer to fetch more bullets, waited until the gunbearer had run to the car to get them, slapped two fresh bullets in his double, and shot the buff at a range of about 1 ft. It fell in his lap.

When it was founded Ker and Downie had only three qualified hunters, the two founders Sid Downey and Donald Ker and one full-time employee: Frank Bowman. He once hunted with Robert Ruark who christened him Professor. He was always looking for new and difficult country to hunt in. He went on safari to the remotest parts of the Rufiji and Ruaha rivers in Tanganyika when they were virtually unknown areas. He fought in the Abyssinian campaign in World War 2. He was the first member to be elected East African Professional Hunters' Association and was made a full member in 1946. He retired to New Guinea and Australia.
