Esther Eliza Hopcraft, Esther's Story, 1996 One of our neighbours was Eric Ward, a naval commander who ran his place rather like a battleship, inspecting every hut regularly, surveying his land through powerful naval binoculars and then issuing orders from his verandah through a megaphone. He was a wealthy man with a fine house filled with beautiful china and silver, but no one was allowed on the farm uninvited. As he never did invite anyone, and sent any would-be friendly callers packing, he was known as a hard, bitter, lonely man. My husband got to know him; somehow he came unintentionally to an Oxford Group meeting, and somehow he had a conversion almost as radical as St Paul's. He was like a newborn child, and wrote to the newspaper to tell everybody what had happened to him.... He had had a terrible row with another neighbour, Willie Allison. He had ridden onto his land and somehow upset Willie, who had chased him back on to his own land with a horse- whip. Now he went to Willie and apologised for whatever had caused the anger, and they became firm friends.
