Alastair Scobie, Animal Heaven, 1953  Stocky, red faced, wore a remarkably battered hat decorated with a strip of lionskin from a maneater he had been forced to shoot. Was warden off the western end of the Tsavo National Park. His usual dress was hunting shirt, shorts and handmade desert boots, much patched by an Indian cobbler. Son of the Chief Native Commissioner for Southern Rhodesia, as a young man he saw money would be made in ivory poaching, until a heavy fine imposed by his own father stopped the fun. Then he became a control officer, stationed far out in the wilds, his task to shoot out the animals carrying the tsetse fly. In his younger days he was an advocate of the killing of game, but he laid his rifle aside and later disliked hunting.
