Red 22 - Native Civil Hospital, Mombasa
Carman - When the depression of the 1930s began to make itself felt in East Africa, stringent measures of economy were introduced and Paterson [DMS] took the opportunity to get rid of some of the 'dead wood' from amongst his personnel. One of the heads to fall was that of my old friend Ogden who was still the Office Superintendent. Carlyle Johnstone who was by this time on the Headquarter Staff, suggested that he was redundant, but Paterson was highly indignant. 'Yes' said Johnstone in reply to his protests. 'But what does he do?' 'Why he is the Office Superintendent of course!' 'I know that that is what he is called' replied Johnstone, 'but I repeat, what does he actually do? He opens the morning mail, reads all the confidential letters and then sends the office boy to distribute them. He then sits back and reads the paper; you know as well as I do that when Ogden goes on leave it is never necessary to replace him.' Johnstone was one of the few people to whom Paterson would listen and Ogden was retired on pension.
