Pioneer Spirit - [Raymond M-Barberton] - The Oliviers, who lived next door to the Kemps, were Boers. This was before the name Afrikaaner was generally used to define Afrikaans speaking South Africans. They were friendly, simple people of little education though, like the Voortrekkers, they were completely at home in the wilderness. Old man Olivier was a tall, strong man and having no money, he contracted to plant coffee for John Kemp in exchange for that part of Kemp's farm on the east side of the Kassowai river. Here on this little farm, Olivier and his wife and family settled. The rank tobacco that old man J.J. Olivier grew, cured and sold in cloth bags to all of us who smoked pipes, was a greenish dreadful weed which he named "Olivier's Celebrated Golden Leaf Tobacco". It must have had some excellent qualities as most of those who smoked it outlived the age and the BEA we know.
